Month-by-Month Weather in Jaisalmer
October is the shoulder season proper — daytime highs start the month near 34°C and cool through the low 30s by the end, with pleasant, mild evenings. It's a good month if you want fort and haveli sightseeing without midday heat slowing you down, and dunes trips are already comfortable.
November and March are arguably the best-value months on the calendar. Daytime temperatures settle into the high 20s to low 30s°C, nights are cool enough to enjoy a bonfire without needing serious winter layers, and camps haven't hit peak-season rates yet.
December and January are peak season for a reason: daytime highs drop to a comfortable 24–26°C, ideal for walking the fort and old city. Nights are a different story — temperatures at Sam Sand Dunes can fall to 5–8°C or lower after midnight, so pack a proper jacket even though the days feel mild.
February holds similar daytime and night temperatures to January, warming gradually as the month goes on, and is when the Jaisalmer Desert Festival takes over the city and dunes for a few days (more on that below).
April through June is peak summer, with daytime temperatures routinely crossing 40°C and sometimes touching 45°C+. Camel and jeep safaris are typically limited to early morning or dusk, and midday is largely spent indoors. This is the cheapest and quietest stretch of the year if you can tolerate the heat.
July through September is monsoon season — humid, with unpredictable but generally light rainfall by Indian monsoon standards, since Jaisalmer sits in one of the driest parts of the country. The desert briefly turns green, which is an unusual sight for most visitors, but some camps run reduced services and the camel-safari-and-sunset experience isn't as reliable.
The Jaisalmer Desert Festival (February): What to Know Before You Book
The Desert Festival is held in Jaisalmer every February, with exact dates varying year to year around the full moon — check the current year's dates before booking rather than assuming a fixed date. Events include camel races, turban-tying and moustache competitions, folk music and dance performances, and a closing celebration out at Sam Sand Dunes.
It's one of the best times to experience Rajasthani culture in a concentrated few days, but it's also when Jaisalmer is at its busiest and most expensive — camps and hotels raise rates and sell out weeks, sometimes months, in advance for festival dates.
If the festival itself isn't the draw, visiting in February but outside the specific festival week gets you the same excellent weather with noticeably smaller crowds and more normal pricing.
Peak Season vs Off-Season: What You're Trading Off
Peak season (December, January, and Desert Festival week in February) gets you the best weather of the year, but also the biggest crowds at the fort and havelis and the highest desert camp rates — book well ahead if you're traveling in this window.
Shoulder season (October, November, and March) is the best value on the calendar: weather is still comfortable for walking and camping, crowds are noticeably thinner than peak, and camp and hotel rates are generally lower.
Off-season (April through September) has the lowest prices and virtually no crowds, but the trade-off is real — extreme heat in summer and unpredictable humidity in monsoon both limit the outdoor time that makes a Jaisalmer trip worthwhile, especially the camel safari and dune sunset.
So, When Should You Actually Book?
If you want the best weather regardless of cost or crowds, book December or January and reserve your desert camp early. If you want the same comfortable weather with better value and smaller crowds, aim for October, November, or March — this is what most repeat visitors and locals recommend for a first trip.
If you specifically want the Desert Festival experience, target February and book your camp and hotel as early as possible, since festival-week availability disappears fast. If your priority is the lowest possible price and you can tolerate serious heat, April through June or the monsoon months offer the steepest discounts — just plan around midday and manage expectations on the safari experience.
